Gilligan’s Island Almost Had a Sequel

The family and I decided to take a trip to the Bahamas.

My cousin and I decided to plan some events for the trip to ensure everyone had fun.  One of which was a private captained boat that would take us island hopping.  Whoop whoop!  Let’s hop around the islands mannn!

The day came for us all to go, and the weather was not cooperating.  Rain was coming down like crazy.  We reluctantly headed to the boat dock.  The captain was texting us letting us know the rain would let up soon.

We make it to the boat dock.  It’s 8am, and the streets are bare.  NO ONE is out!  The streets are flooding over and lightning is now striking.  We are all looking at each other like maybe today is not the day to go on a boat.  Then…the rain stops.  Lightning has paused.

The captain text us (we were nearby under shelter).  He tells us to come on.

We get to the boat. It is quite small compared to what we envisioned.  The captain had the most appropriate music on  “Let it Rain Over Me” by Pitbull and Marc Anthony.  I feel like an islander now!

We are now pumped and dancing around to this perfect song. The boat is on it’s way.

We make it out about 15 minutes and the rain begins again.  The captain continues his speech as if the rain is not falling.  Then lightning strikes.   The captain continues: “to the left is the Atlantis.”

I think to myself, so this is how I’m going out…struck by lightning in the Bahamas and lost at sea.  I pop open a Heineken (since that is a great coping mechanism).

all clouds boat ride

We notice that the captain has to keep his hand on a button in order to keep water from coming in the boat (I don’t remember the details of this. Jerry (my step-dad) is a boat guy and was the one that observed this).  Hope his hand doesn’t get tired.

We make it to our first island.  No one is there.  We are the only fools that would take on this adventure.  The rain is pouring and there are still some lightning strikes happening.  We are all getting a bit concerned that we may not make it back.  Just when we think that this will not end well…the sun appears.  No more lightning.  We are now somewhat safe with the exception of the captain inhaling rum punch and the fact that there is a button he needs to hold to keep the boat working.

We made it Gilligan’s Island and thankfully returned home.  No doubt there are many stories from that adventure.  More to come.

Austin Texas I Have Arrived

Day one is in the books.  With only a few days to explore Austin, I had to make sure I planned and prioritized well.  I’ve been on a health kick lately so with that comes exercise.  I landed in Austin at 11am and made my way to the hotel in downtown.  I changed into my running gear, and off I go.  Running and sight seeing.  The current destination is the Barton Springs.  It is nice and hot.  So what better, than to run through a new city to a place to cool off.

The Barton Springs is beautiful and the water feels great.  I was there at a perfect time because it was not crowded.  I plan to go back on Friday if the weather is nice and take a book and read and listen to the water.

Barton Springs

Next up is food.  I found a cool spot with great reviews online.  I hoofed it over to a place called June’s.  I really loved the atmosphere.  It reminded me of many of the cafes I have seen in Italy with an eclectic spin.  They have an amazing wine list.  I opt for a Rose and  some cheese and salami to snack on.

Menu at JunesWine and Food at Junes

I grab a coffee at Bennu and made my way back to the hotel.  I made a pit stop to check out the Lady Bird Trail.  I plan to run that today or Friday.  Back at the hotel I need to get my phone charged and I need to get recharged (I’ve walked over 10 miles).  I get a shower and it is time to go!  I walk to a place called Italic.  Really loved this place.  It is a coffee shop that walks back into  a wine bar.  This is right up my alley.  My fiance, Carlos, meets me here (he has been working all day while I explore).  We grab a glass of wine and snack on some prosciutto.  We are gearing up to see Lovely the Band at the Scoot Inn.

On the walk to the Scoot Inn, we hear music coming from all around.  Tonight we plan to explore the local night life and hope to find some great musicians.

walking the streets of Austin

We arrive at the Scoot Inn.  I love the venue.  It is outdoor and is small enough to be quaint, but big enough to not be too crowded.  We secured a spot up top because my old age has made me some what claustrophobic and not a fan of elbow to elbow people.

There were not a ton of people there when we arrived.

Arrive early at Scoot Inn

But if soon filled up…

Crowd anticipating Lovely the Band coming out at Scoot Inn

The first two bands that played were not the greatest.  The sound of the music over powered their words and made the clarity bad.  We were worried that Lovely the Band would be the same.  Wrong.  They were amazing.  We almost didn’t go to the show because I only knew the one song “Broken.” Sorry Lovely.   At the last minute, I read that Scoot Inn was one of the best places in Austin to see music and then realized that was where the 20$ Lovely the Band show was and thought 2 birds one stone.  I am now officially a fan of Lovely the Band.  All of their songs were great and they put on an amazing show.

Great end to my first day.

Now I have arrived at my first stop of the second day.  A coffee shop called Hot L Coffee.  This place is perfect.  It has a homey vibe and is a wonderful place to get my blog on.

Day 3 in Prague

Starbucks in hand, we begin the voyage to Petrin Hill.  The concierge told us about a cable car that would take us up to Petrin Hill.  We begin the hike to the cable car.  During the journey it crosses our mind that the walk to the cable car is quite steep.  So many stairs! Our calves are burning!  Suddenly, we arrive at Petrin Hill.  Obviously we missed a turn to the cable car somewhere.

walway to petrin hilljourney to petrin hillstairs to petrin hillcable car petrin hill

We get there at 9:30am.   We both need to go to the bathroom.

We go into where the cable car would have taken us.  We go to the bathroom, but you must have 5 crowns (1 penny) to get in. I used my last change for the coffee this morning.  I look at Brian.  He doesn’t have change either.  We walk over to the tower.  It opens at 10am.  We see another bathroom and the women’s door is open.  I am hopeful and race over.  There is a lady inside.  She wants 20 crowns (5 cent).  The price is going up!!!  I explain that I have no change.  I pull out a 1000 dollar bill (25$ USD).  She says “NO. No change.”  30 minutes is way too long to wait.  I see a man and wave my 1000 dollar bill and ask for change.  He gives me two 500 dollar bills.  Language barrier, but at least we are getting closer.   I ask a lady that works in the tower.  She says no.  I have to wait ’til 10am.

We go down to a garden where people are walking around.petrin hill garden  I shamelessly ask people for a penny or to break a 500 dollar bill.  It’s 9:40am.  Right.  All of that happened in 10 minutes.  Going back down the hill is not an option.  It was a long hike and would take us until 10am to get back down, and we aren’t confident in our ability to find the cable car.

I go back to the lady in the bathroom.  The one that wanted 20 crowns.  I give her the whole 500 dollar bill (12.5 USD).  She says “No change.”  I say “I don’t care.  Keep it.”  She then gives me change, and I go to the bathroom.  That’s right.  She gave me change.

The tower opens.  We opted to take the lift since we already had our workout in from the hike.

The history lesson about Petrin Hill is Czech went to Paris and were amazed by the Eiffel Tower.  They wanted to build their own.  The Eiffel Tower was too expensive so they found the highest hill they could find and added the tower to the top of the hill.  Petrin Hill is 2m higher than the Eiffel Tower with the assistance of the hill.  We climbed the hill which is a good portion of the height.  We got some amazing photos at the top of the tower, but we got even better ones when we took the stairs down.

The tower is enclosed by glass, but the stairway down (300 steps) is open to outdoors for a good portion.  It is windy which is terrifying that high up, but I did get some amazing shots.  I started to get scared when the wind picked up.  I thought to myself…don’t get greedy you got enough; stop before the wind makes you drop your phone and lose all of them.

view on the way down from petrin hill

I reached the bottom and was freezing, so I got a hot chocolate.  Best hot chocolate ever.  So good!

hot chocolate at petrin hill

There is also a Mirror Maze at the top of the hill.  We decide to go in.  The maze is short, but there are funny mirrors that allow us to take funny photos.  It is fun, but I would probably say you could skip this if you are short on time or cash.

We make our way down the hill to the Monastery and go into the library.  This is the perfect stop to get some amazing shots   It is a quick site to see that is worth it for the incredible architecture and artistic scenery.  We realize that you are supposed to pay to take pictures.  We get quite a few before we are caught and pay the price (50 crowns or 2.5 USD). Well worth it!

We could not leave the Monastery without trying the brewery.  I walked up to the bar and stood for quite a while before realizing that you have a specific spot you must stand at for the bartender to take your order (right in front of the taps).  I get my first IPA in Prague and it was perfect. Not too hoppy.  It was just right.

We are getting hungry and realize that Bellevista (the place the concierge recommended) is only a block away.  We head that way and the concierge was right. Amazing views.  We order drinks and an appetizer of bruschetta.

We decide to try Lokal later since the concierge has been on point the whole time.  The bruschetta is different from what we are used to, but it is really good.  There was yellow sauce on the bread (we think it was a honey mustard).  The cheese is more like a parmesan instead of mozzarella.  I really like this style.  We leave and get pictures of the view.

prague view walking

On to the shops of Mala Strana.  We stumble upon art on the walls as we make our way.  We walked around for an hour or so and popped in and out of the local shops.  Lots of cool jewelry and handmade items.

It is about 2:30 and we are hungry again and we go to Lokal.  We order a variety of things to try and share.  Sausage, frankfurters, aged fried cheese, potato dumplings, pasta salad.  I love the frankfurters, aged fried cheese, and pasta salad.  This pasta salad is different from the night before.  It reminds me of some that I have had in North Carolina but with a Czech spin.  The potato dumpling would have been great with a meat sauce.

lokal

After lunch, we make our way back to the hotel (It is 4pm).  I lay down for 30 minutes and then get antsy.  I decided to find a wine bar.  I find one that got good reviews and take a shower and set out to get there.  I make it Vinograf.  They serve only Czech wines.  I ask for a full-bodied but am told that is not a specialty of Czech wine. She gives me a medium bodied wine and it was pretty good.  I order a small cheese plate.  The cheese is good along with the marmalade served with it.

It is almost 6:15pm and I know that I want to find a good spot to get a great picture of The Charles River Bridge when it gets dark.  I saw a restaurant right on the water when I crossed the bridge.  I was told that it was pricey but thought it would be worth having drinks there to capture the shot. I’m unsure of the name so I have to find my way down.  I find some art on the journey!!

I arrive, and it is called Kampapark.

kampapark

They have a table available outside by the water.  It is cold, but they have heaters right next to the table.  The view here is amazing!

kampapark view and wine

Brian meets me there and we have wine and watch as the bridge changes with time change.  We were able to get some amazing shots and had some great wine.

We decided to try the boat bars once more since it wasn’t raining.  No luck, but it was a nice walk on the town with a full moon.  The boat bars look cool, but it just wasn’t meant to be for us on this trip.  It is 9pm and we are exhausted from the site seeing and we have an early bus ride to Poland in the morning, so we decide to head back to the hotel.  We did see some cool architecture on the way back.

We have a drink at the bar and figure out arrangements for the adventure to Poland tomorrow and then call it a night.

Thank you, Prague, for such an amazing time.  Until next time…

Hello Poland! See you tomorrow…

Day 2 in Prague-How much can you cram in one day?

I wake up early filled with excitement. I decide to get ready and get out early to get pictures before the world wakes up and inserts themselves into scenery.  I start with the Charles River Bridge.

It is as gorgeous as described.  There are few people already there taking wedding pictures and other photographers are out and about also trying to catch the beauty of the bridge during the calm.   I take pictures and walk across the bridge to get all the different angles.  I check the map once I am across and realize I am only a few blocks from the Lennon Wall.  It is 7:30am.  I decide to book it in an attempt to get a picture before other tourists awake and do the same.  I get there and get a few great shots, just before other people start trickling in (we go again the next day in the afternoon and the wall is packed with people and very hard to get a clean shot). Highly recommend waking up early and getting the clean shot.  Worth it!

I see a Starbucks and am in dire need of an iced coffee.  It doesn’t open until 8am and it is 7:50.   A lady is outside setting up tables and tells me the Starbucks in Old Town (close to my hotel (4 min away)) opens at 7:30am.  I decide to head that way. I get my coffee and can feel it take effect as I become more alert and energized.  I make my way back to the hotel to meet Brian.

starbucks coffee

I meet Brian in the lobby.  The concierge (Erika) asks what we have planned for the day.  We list all sorts of activities and she frowns.  She says all the activities we have planned are good for sunny days.  We look outside, and it is raining.  She checks the weather for tomorrow.  Sunny for the win.  She tells us to save those activities for tomorrow and pulled out a map and began helping us plan this now rainy day.  She recommended the Prague Castle (this was already on the to do list, so it was a great option), Manifesto, and boat bars (which she did say would be better in the sun also).  She gives us free drink tickets to Manifesto and explains that it is all sorts of food carts (great recommendation that we would have never come across). She then gives us a great path way on the map to get to the back of the castle to avoid the lines and to have less crowds. She gives us a recommendation for local food called Lokal and added a great place to eat and take in a view for the itinerary tomorrow (Bellevista).

We take off on this adventure and try to follow the map to the back entrance to the schedule. Many stairs later, we find out that Brian I are both not so great at reading maps so we end up at the front of the castle.  We get pictures of the guards of the castle and make our way in.  The line is not bad since it is still early.  We get in and the place is already packed with tourist.  We get to the ticket both.  They have 3 options for tickets that give 3 pathways of the castle.  Erika recommended we do A or C based on our interests of art.  We opted for C, but the ticket girl convinced us A was the better option (we still wonder if we should have gone with our gut with C).

guard picture

We start the journey of A and the architecture is unreal.  Beautiful is not a strong enough word.  We start with St. Vitus Cathedral.  I love the structure and the art on the ceilings.  Golden Lane is next, and we see armor along with examples of the style of living at that time.  We finish with Daliborka Tower which shows how people were imprisoned and hung.  The castle was good overall, but I would probably not go back unless it was to see if C was better.  It was good not great compared to all the other places we went.

inside castle cathedral

As we leave we see a beautiful view and stop and take pictures and admire this amazing place.

prague castle view

It is too early to go to Lokal.  It is 10:30am and Lokal opens at 11:30am.  Brian needs coffee so we journey on to find the magic energy juice.  We stop into a place (I don’t’ remember the name).  The lady is not the friendliest and we get Brian espresso.  We walk around contemplating our next move when Brian sees a garden that we venture into.  The garden is Vojun Garden. We walk around and notice there are peahens.  This is the first time I have ever seen a peahen (or even even heard of the name).  We figure where there are peahens, there must be peacocks.  We are right.  We find a peacock nearby and then later see babies.  I love detours like these.

We are both getting hungry. Manifesto is 1.5 miles away, so we decide to start walking that way and will have lunch there and save Lokal for tomorrow. As we are on the way to Manifesto, we pass by the swans that I saw from The Charles River Bridge.  We detour and go down to visit with the swans. They are very domesticated and will come to you (especially if you have food).

We get back on track to Manifesto and when we arrive we realize this was worth the hike.  There are food huts of all sorts.  Czech food, Indian food, Korean food, burgers and fries, vegetarian and so much more.  There are also drink huts.  Due to rain there is not many people there, so we get to avoid lines.  We get a Czech style BBQ sandwich with goat cheese and chili sauce and cheese fries with aioli and chili mayo.  I get the special which is a Black Velvet (champagne and Guinness) drink as my free drink.  It is good, but I would probably pick differently if I had a do over.  Brian gets a bourbon lemonade drink which is pretty good.  The food is incredible.  I want to try more but am way too full.

Brian wants to do a hike in a Czech National Park.  The idea sounds cool to me, but I’m hesitant because we have already walked a ton and there is till lots more to do.  He says 6 miles, and I am out.  I tell him he is on his own for a 6-mile hike.  He drops it down to 3 miles and away we go.  We get an Uber (the hike is 15 minutes away by car).  The address for the entrance to the park is a little off and we arrive in front of a neighborhood.  The Uber driver doesn’t speak the greatest English and we decide to get out and wing it.  We google map our way to the trail we want to hike.  We walk through a few neighborhoods, observing the different housing and finding trees with what looks like blueberries.  Several hills later we find Divoka Sarka trail.  It is an easy hike with alternating terrain and beautiful trees and other greenery.  We see small pathways that detour to places and we curiously check them out.  One takes us through trees with tiny apples and leads a huge wide-open field.    As we continue, we find a stream and a lake and then we are spit out of the trail at a McDonalds.  This conveniently lets us get another Uber back to the hotel.  I am glad I didn’t miss this.  It is something I would have never considered doing, but I am glad I did and will keep this in the options for other international adventures.  I am also extremely sore and decide a massage will be a must once we get back to the hotel.

We get back to the hotel.  It is about 3:30pm. We split ways so that we can rest up and so that I can get a massage appointment. I immediately go up to the 7th floor to the hotel spa and beg for an appointment.  There are none available, but I’m told she will check with a therapist that is not in now to see if they can come in.  She says she will call me.

I go down to my room and lay down.  It’s not long before the lady from the spa calls me and says she has an appointment for 5:30pm (she later calls back and moves it to 6pm).  Perfect!!!  I text Brian my new itinerary for the spa and let him know that I am going to go check out the boat bars if he is interested.  He says down in 5 and away we go.

We reach the boat bars and they look awesome, but they are closed due to the rain.  They are literally boats you can bar hop one from the next. One is a pirate ship that only serves rum.  Another is a beer boat.  Another has cocktails and so on and so forth.

W e decide to walk around for a bit and eventually find the original Pilsner Urquell Restaurant and pop in.  We order a pilsner and it is the best pilsner I have had to date.  It is now 5:30pm and we make our way back to the hotel so that I can make my spa appointment.

I get to the spa and am escorted to a changing room.  I’m handed a robe and slides and shown a container of paper panties (yep-the exact same ones from Ljubljana!) that are strongly suggested that I put on.  I get changed and go to the waiting room.  My massage therapist comes out and shows me to the room.  She is the amazing.  She starts working out all the pain points in lower back from all the walking.  She even relieves the tension in my neck and shoulders from the plane ride.  I finish up as a new woman feeling ready to take on the world.

I shower and meet Brian down at the hotel bar at 7:30pm.  I have a glass of wine and we go over the restaurants he looked up over the time-lapse.  He found some great ones.  We narrow it down to 2.  One has a good view (I am a sucker for a view), but it is a little expensive and a little bit further away (Restaurant Zvonice).  The other is moderately priced is known for the local dish of goulash and close by (Mlejnice).  It is sprinkling at the moment.  We decided to go for drinks and appetizers at Zvonice and then do goulash at Mlejnice.  We make our way to Zvonice.  During the research process we found that it should take about 13 minutes to get there walking.  We think we have an idea of where it is and decide to not use gmaps.  We get to a point and realize we are turned around.  We get gmaps out and realize we are now 18 minutes away (whoops!!). In that same moment, the bottom falls out.  It is pouring rain.  I mean really pouring.  So hard!  We jump under an awning.  We lose signal on the phone.  It lightens for a second and we decide to make a run in the direction that we were last instructed by gmaps.  We don’t make it far before the rain intensifies again and we see lightning.  We duck in another covered spot.  A taxi pulls up.  A woman gets out. I run desperately to the driver and ask if we can get in.  He says yes, and we are saved (for now). We get to the restaurant and decide that we are enduring the cost and eating full meal here after the obstacles we just endured.  We go in and go up to the 7th floor (the restaurant is on both the 7th and 8th floor).  We walk in soaking wet.  A waitress kindly asks if we have a reservation.  We look at one another with the oh shit face.  We say no.  She tells us we can try the 8th floor.  We do, but no luck.  We go back down.  We try to get an Uber.  None available. We talk to some locals and they explained that with the rain, Uber and taxis will take a long time to get in the current weather.  The ask where we want to go.  We tell them the location for Mljenice.  They recommend the subway.  They tell us to go straight and it will be on the right. The rain lightens, and we make a run for it.  Literal run.  Lightening is striking in the distance. We never see a subway on the right but see one on the left.  We bolt to it.  Signage is not great, and we have no idea where to go.  GPS still not working. We see 2 police officers.  We tell them that we are trying to get back towards Old Town and ask which subway to take.  They say abruptly “None. Let me see your passport.”

“I don’t have my passport on me.” I respond.

“What hotel are you staying at?” He says.

“The Emblem Hotel.”

“Okay you can go.” He says.

I think…go where?  Remember…we were asking you where to go.  We leave the subway back to the rain thankful that things did not get worse in that situation.  We get a spotty signal and think we have the directions back and begin running again.  Only to find out that it was the wrong direction again.  We stop and find a local who can give us directions to get us back on the right path.  We run in the direction provided until we get to the square.  We then make a few more missed turns and have to turnaround but are eventually at the door of Mlejnice.

We order wine.  It is needed after all of that.  We are now starving.  We order a cheese plate appetizer and a ham plate with horseradish and mustard.  The wine is great and is $2 USD.  The cheese is good, and the ham is AMAZING (I am still salivating over this ham)!!!    For our main dish we get the goulash in the bread bowl.  So good.  Really really good.  It was reviewed as the best goulash around and I believe it.  We also got pasta salad to compare to what we are used to.  This was different from American style pasta and was good.  It seems to have mustard seeds in it and the flavor combination was unlike any pasta salad I have ever had.

The rain has turned into a drizzle when we leave the restaurant.  We decide to go to a jazz club that I found that had great reviews.  The club is Agharta Jazz Club.  We get there and there is a cover of ~12$USD.  We decide…what the heck #wheninprague.  We go in to where the jazz is being played. It is a rock cellar type cave with amazing musicians.  The music and sound quality are incredible. Well worth 12$. We later find out that structure was built-in the 14th century and is one of the greatest jazz clubs in the world.  It is an unforgettable night of music and culture.

After the club, we go back and split ways to crash.  It was an eventful day.

Day 1 in Prague- Resist the Jet-Lag

Prague from the Airplane
View from the plane as we land in Prague

Walking up to the doors of The Emblem Hotel a guy runs out and grabs our bags and welcomes us.  He shows us to a nice relaxing a couch where he asks that we sit and provide our passports.  We sit and relax as he goes to check us in.

I see a lady walk in with Starbucks and asked where Starbucks is.  The concierge overhears and assists with directions and explains that we would each be provided with a cell phone that would have recommendations along with GPS and the ability to call to and from both within and out of country. I think this was too good to be true.

The man returns from checking us in, and ushers us to our rooms carrying our bags.  Service like I have never seen.  Such a great place right from the start.

The room is very clean and has plenty of space.  There is a “sleep spray” beside the bed.  It smells of lavender.  I jump on the bed and it is as cozy as it looks.  I walk over to the desk is maps and guides along with the cell phone the concierge mentioned.  WOW!!! I look in the closet and there is t-shirts and socks for purchase.  The socks are awesome! I ended up buying 3 pair.  They are called Happy Socks.  The bathroom has a nice vanity set with Q-tips and make up sponges.

I change and go downstairs to meet my coworker.  I look up coffee places and find the coffee shop Albert Einstein use to go and work from.   Sounds like a winner.  We begin the walk to Café Louvre and take in the streets hustle and bustle and smells.  Everywhere you look there are things to take in.  We see a Beer Museum and decided after coffee we need to make our way back to this.

The coffee at Café Louvre is amazing along with the atmosphere. It does not disappoint.  We are now juiced up to conquer Prague (still a bit jet lagged but will most definitely push through).

We make our way back to the Prague Beer Museum.  A walkway leads us back to an outdoor patio.  We walk through the patio and at the back there is a place to purchase tickets (~20 USD each).  The ticket includes the museum and a beer tasting.  We are in!  We go into the museum and see old style bottling methods as well as the various materials that have been used for bottling over the years.  The most interesting fact I learn is that in the 20th century Anheuser-Busch (American) and Budweiser Budvar (Czech) were in a trademark war over the name Budweiser.  In 1939 Budweiser Budvar conceded exclusive rights to Anheuser-Busch.  In 1994 Budweiser Budvar decided not to sign a trademark agreement dividing the territory across the world.  In 2010 Anheuser-Busch lost its last instance of appeal with the EU which means it may not register the name Budweiser as EU trademark for beer.

We leave the museum and walk across to find beer!  We walk down some stairs to a rocky style cellar with tables and taps. We receive our 4 hefty beer samples and find a table. It’s 4 lagers; 2 light, 1 semi-dark, and 1 dark.  We try them and make opinions.  I really like the 2 light and the dark.  Not a fan of the semi-dark.  The dark is surprisingly light texture.  The look makes you feel like it will be a meal but is light and refreshing.

We leave the museum and start making our way back to our hotel.  On the way we see a graduation class in front of City Hall taking pictures.  We join in and take pictures of them too to join in on the experience (we tried later to figure out what they graduated from but have not figured this out yet).

Graduation happening in Czech

My coworker (Brian) and I get back to the hotel and split ways to rest for 30 minutes and to get changed.  We meet back up at 4:30 and make our way to the Grand Bohemian Hotel to attend a Mozart Dinner.  We walk through Old town where all the action is happening.  All types of entertainment as you look around.  Guys painted gold or silver that look like they are standing on air, panda bear costumes, street car food, and so many people taking it all in.  We take pictures as we make our way to the dinner.

Lively Old Town Square Man in the Air
We arrive at the Grand Bohemian Hotel and go down to the ballroom.  What we arrive to is unlike any other.  The ballroom is gorgeous with balconies and beautiful art on the ceilings and gold all around making us feel luxurious. We are escorted to our table and are told we are upgraded to front row seating.  We have unlimited drink passes and are given champagne right way.  We order red wine and wait for the performance to begin.

Musicians walk out on stage. A waiter soon comes ask me if I need wine.  I look at my already full glass of wine and look back at him.  Then starts the performance.  He begins singing opera and I realize I am part of the act.  After the first set, we are provided soup while we wait for the next set.  The soup is great.  It’s split pea and has great flavor.  The next set comes on and is just as good.  At the end of the set we are given beef with potatoes and vegetables.  The last set comes on and has an amazing finish.  We are then of course provided with dessert.  With our bellies full, the show is over, and we make our way out back to the streets.

We see a sign for a rooftop bar and make our way up.  We walk through a mall to get there. The place is called the Fashion Terrace.  The perimeter is decorated with beautiful flowers and the view is amazing.  We take in the city over a couple of drinks.

We decide to leave in time to catch the top of the hour (9pm) because we read that the clock in the square puts on a performance. We try to get out the way we came, but no such luck as the mall is closed.  We see an elevator and try to get out this way, but no luck.  It requires a badge.  We look around a bit confused.  There is no other way out.  We go back to the elevator.  We press “G.” It works. We get down to the street and hustle to get to the square for clock show.

We get there at 8:58 and anxiously wait the 2 minutes anticipating what is to come. 9 ‘o clock strikes, and nothing happens.

We wait a couple more minutes…nothing.

We decided to go to the top of the clock tower and see what views it has to offer.  The ceilings are covered in beautiful art.

We get to the top and the views are incredible.  I get a picture of the entire square (thanks to my fisheye lens for my phone by Moment).

We ask about the clock performance and find that it is under construction (will have to see that on the next visit).

We are both exhausted from the flight and all the adventure and decide to head back to the hotel.  We sit down at the bar for one last drink and then split for shut eye.

Tips From Trips: Use the elevator for the clock tower.  There will be time to get exercise.  Conserve your calves for later.

Day 1 in Prague- Fight the Jet Lag

Prague from the Airplane
View from the plane as we land in Prague

Walking up to the doors of The Emblem Hotel at noon and guy runs out and grabs our bags and welcomes us.  He shows us to a nice relaxing a couch where he asks that we sit and provide our passports.  We sit and relax as he checks us in.

I see a lady walk in with Starbucks and asked where Starbucks (don’t hate) is.  The concierge overhears and assists with directions and explains that we would each be provided with a cell phone that would have recommendations along with GPS and the ability to call to and from both within and out of country. This is the first time I have ever seen this.  What an amazing addition to the hotel to ensure a good experience.

The man returns from checking us in, and ushers us to our rooms carrying our bags.  Five star service! Such a great place right from the start.

The room is very clean and has plenty of space.  There is a “sleep spray” beside the bed to spray the pillows.  It smells of lavender. In addition to it being available it  is also a parting gift. The bed is very comfortable.

The room meets all expectations.

Side note:  The only thing I could offer as constructive criticism would be to change the shower style.  It currently has a wrap around shower curtain.  There is no way to shut the curtain without it touching you.  For those that know me, I am a slight germaphobe.  I can only imagine how many other people the shower curtain touched.  I ended up showering with it open.

I change and go downstairs to meet my coworker.  I look up coffee places and find a coffee shop Albert Einstein use to work from.   Sounds like a winner.  We begin the walk to Café Louvre and take in the streets hustle and bustle and smells.  Everywhere you look there are things to take in.  We see a Beer Museum and decided after coffee we need to make our way back to this.

The Beer Museum Sign

The coffee at Café Louvre is amazing along with the atmosphere. It does not disappoint.  The attention to detail in the coffee art along with the beauty in menus and decor made for an amazing experience.

Details of The Beer Museum

Fun Fact:  The US is second in the world for beer production with China taking the lead.

Fun Fact of Beer Production

We leave the museum and start making our way back to our hotel.  On the way we see a graduation class in front of City Hall taking pictures.  We join in and take pictures of them too to join in on the experience (we tried later to figure out what they graduated from but have not figured this out yet).

We arrive at the Grand Bohemian Hotel and go down to the ballroom.  What we arrive to is unlike any other.  The ballroom is gorgeous with balconies and beautiful art on the ceilings and gold all around.  Quite luxurious.

With our bellies full, the show is over, and we make our way out back to the streets.

We see a sign for a rooftop bar and make our way up.  We walk through a mall to get the top. The place is called the Fashion Terrace.  The perimeter is decorated with beautiful flowers and the view is amazing.  We take in the city over a couple of drinks.

Tips from trips: We took a lot of stairs because we didn’t think to look for elevators or other options.  On day one your legs are fresh, but day 3 your calves will be on fire.  Look for the elevator!

Let the Exploring Begin- Prague

I am on a flight on the way to Prague.  I am ecstatic to go to this beautiful place.  A few items on the itinerary are Petrin Hill, Mozart Dinner, Old Town, The Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and a cruise on the Vltava River.  There are many others, but I am putting these at the top of the list.

Petrin Hill made it to the list because from what I’ve read, the view is amazing.  Mozart Dinner has amazing musical performances that change with each course of dinner.  Old Town is a must see to indulge int he culture.  The Charles Bridge and Prague Castle look like eye candy that I have to indulge in.  Lastly, I have found some of the coolest places while on river cruises.  These give you a vantage point.

Anyone from Prague out there?  I would love your input and would coffee and food recommendations.

Stay tuned…

Not Your Typical Massage

After many hours of travel, I arrived at The Grand Union Hotel in Ljubljana Slovenia.  I saw they had a very nice spa.  I had a crick in my neck and could not wait to get a nice relaxing massage.

I put my luggage down in the room and went up to the spa to book an appointment.  Lucky for me, they had an appointment available in an hour.  By the way, they have an awesome indoor pool as part of the spa.  Fancy.

Ljublana Slovenia Pool at Grand Union Hotel

I go up in an hour for the appointment.  They take me to my massage room. I undress. To my birthday suit (I get massages often and that is the norm for me and then I get under covers to keep myself from flashing the massage therapist).

I look around and see that the bed does not have sheets.  Only towels that are meant to lay on.  Uh oh.  In walks a little woman there to massage me.  I’m unconformably standing there exposed.  She walks to a drawer and gets something out.  She walks back and hands it to me.

It’s paper panties.  She says “put them on.” I thought she would leave the room while I put on my new paper panties.  She didn’t. She stood there as I took them out of the wrapper and shamelessly put them on.

I lay down on the towels in my paper panties.

Much to my surprise the Thai woman (did I mention this was a Thai massage in Slovenia?) crawled on to the table.  She sat her bum on mine and began massaging my shoulders and upper back.  I’m thinking to myself…this is a different approach, but she is doing a good job with the shoulders and back.  Then out of the blue, she puts here hands around my shoulders and yanks me backwards and then starts rotating me around.  My head and chest are rotating in a circle.  Whoa!!! What is happening?  She puts me down and then slides backwards.  She is now on my legs.  She coaches me.  “Stay still and hand me your arm.” I follow command and hand her my arm and she starts pulling it backwards while leaning back.  She does this for both (I mean you can’t just do one). She slides back up and then began to hit my back and then digs her elbows in to my back.  I can tell that her whole body is moving in forwards and backwards motions while doing this.

She hops down and does some great massage on my neck.  Only to hop back on the table to get started on the legs.  We finished with a similar approach of stretching from before to complete my legs.  She hopped back down and left the room so that I could change out of my paper panties.

It wasn’t quite the relaxing massage I had in mind, but it did get the crick out of my neck and was quite the experience.  I did go back on my next trip so all in all it is a good massage.  Just different.

Tip from Trip:  Stay open-minded.

Confused in Milan, Italy

After working in Turin, Italy, during the week, I decided to travel by train to Milan (about an hour train ride) to spend my Friday night.

I arrived to Milan Cetrale Railway Station mid afternoon. The train station is very big and practically has a mall in the inside.

milan train station.jpg

I google mapped the hotel I booked and it was only a few blocks from the train station.

Tips from Trips:  Always get the international travel pass for your phone for international travel.  It is only 10$ a day and it lets you keep your exact phone plan from the states.  It comes in handy for navigation and for travel research.

The hotel I stayed at was Hotel Mythos. I was not a fan of the hotel itself, but the location was amazing.  The hotel really was not bad either, but I have an irrational fear of bugs and do not like being in rooms on the first floor because of this irrational fear.  The only room they had left at Hotel Mythos was on the first floor.  This is my worst nightmare.  The room was small, but clean.  What I found interesting, was that the bathroom was the same size as the bedroom. Overall, I did not see a bug and probably would have recommended this hotel if it were not for this irrational fear.

I did a lot of walking taking in the streets and the culture.  I am not a huge fan of big cities, but I have to say that Milan is very pretty.

A friend of mine recommended that I check out the Duomo Terrace.  This was little too far to walk, so I checked my Uber app to see  if Milan has Uber.  They do!  Whoop whoop!

I requested an Uber, and a few minutes later a Mercedes rolled up to pick me up (this is not uncommon in Europe a lot of the Ubers drive in style).  I noticed while in the back seat that my phone had very little batter left.  I often carry my charger with me when traveling to be safe.  I asked the Uber driver is I could charge my phone (as it was a fancy car with a USB port just perfect for my charger).  He said “Of Course!!” he plugged it in. He then started playing ferociously with the radio. Obviously without success.

He looked back at me and said “bluetooth, bluetooth!!!”

I said” No, I just need to charge my phone.”

He disconnected my charger and tossed it back to me, and plugged his phone in.  We then rode in silence. I’m very confused at this moment, but decide that it was my fault for not knowing Italian.

I arrived to Duomo where a man greeted and me and grabbed my hand and tied a bracelet around my wrist.  He explained that this was because I was beautiful, but then asked me for a euro.  This was pre “Shit Card” incident so I did not have cash.  I explained that I had no cash.  He looked very disappointed, and I felt that he may not have actually found me beautiful :).

Duomo was worth the adventure.  Amazing views and the architecture was beautiful.

The next day, I was back at Milan Centrale Railway Station to my the journey to Trieste.   It is early in the morning, and I am dying for coffee.  I see a coffee bar in the train station. I stood at the bar for about five minutes without receiving service.  Finally I looked around and realized you have to go to a the cashier (located away from the bar) in order to pay and get a ticket before the barista will humor your existence. I follow the process and get my ticket and go back to the bar.  I get a double espresso (because iced coffees are impossible to find in Europe) and go to sit down at table.  As  I am sitting (exhausted from staying out too late the night before), I hear someone yelling “Absolutely not!” I turn and a man is shaking his hand and head at me.  Apparently this was a separate service that you pay a service fee to sit and order from the table.  I negotiate with him, and explain that i will order another coffee and pay the fee as long as I can sit.  he agrees.  I’m given a menu and see that they have an iced coffee martini.  Woo hoooo!!!!

I ordered the iced coffee martini.  Sitting with anticipation, he brings it to me and it is full of sugar at the bottom.

iced coffee martini milan.jpg

I politely tell the server that I see that I didn’t explain no sugar, and that I would pay for the coffee he just gave me, but could he get me another with no sugar and I will pay for that as well.  He says “Of course!” He takes my martini glass.  I look over him siphoning the sugar out of my existing drink. He comes back with a smile feeling accomplished (most would be okay with this but I can’t handle sweet at all first thing in the morning).  I try to explain again.  He looks confused.  I’m getting confused on how to say it more clear and realize I only have about 15 more minutes before my train leaves.  I give it one more shot and ask if will make a new to go in a to go cup with no sugar.  He gets it that time and I am given a sugar-free iced coffee in a to go cup.  I pay and then bolt to find a bathroom.

The Milan train station is 3 stories.  I searched the third floor where I was and where the trains come to.  I look, no bathroom.  I saw a sign that said go down. I am running to the second floor and still no bathroom do I find.  Went down another floor, and finally found bathroom.  Thank goodness!!! I race to the restroom  where I find you have to pay.  Pay??? Why don’t I carry cash!!! Why do they charge???!! So many questions.  I rampage my backpack and find exactly one euro.  I’m in!

And…I made my train.  Off to Trieste…

Happy Hour on Wall Street

I was in New York for a training for work a few years ago.  The training was near Wall Street.  As I have mentioned before, I always try to stay in a good location for travel since most of my trips are short.

I stayed in the heart of New York near Central Park the weekend before the training (that story is for a separate blog). I decided to venture Wall Street during the work week.  It was invigorating to feel the hustle of business.  People everywhere moving with purpose in suits hot off the iron.

wall-street.jpg

After one of the trainings, my coworker and I wanted to find a cool spot for drinks and dinner.  A cool spot we did find. It is awesome and Britt approved. The place is called The Dead Rabbit.

When you walk in, the place is packed with people straight out of business meetings.  There is not much room to walk, and the place has a vintage, creative, powerful, business feel.  I have never seen anything like it, and the drinks were amazing.

We put our name on the waiting list for dinner.  The downstairs is all bar and the upstairs is dim-lit dining. Upstairs is a completely different vibe (equally as cool).  Once seated, we were handed a comic book.  Yep, that is the menu.  That’s right.  A comic book!!! So cool.

Overall, the experience is unlike any other and should not be missed if you are ever in the Wall Street area.dead-rabbit-e1535135280514.jpg
